Design experts may tell you the soul of your home are the paintings you place on the walls, the fabrics you choose for your furniture, or the warmth of colors you select for the rooms. It is not that to me. Yes, those aspects are important, but they are more essential for creating a sense of style and demonstrating individual preferences. The soul of the home is that indescribable comfort that envelops you the minute you walk into the house. It the sense that the place is alive with motion, light and sound. It is the knowledge that this is where you laugh or cry with friends; where you might bare you innermost secrets, or notice how uplifted you feel the moment you step into a room. The soul of a home is reflected in the way you live within it.
How do you discover the soul of your home or change the feeling of it? Everything in our personal space is a reflection of what is going on inside of us. The energy that you put into your home can be sensed by all who enter it. Piles of clutter suggest a person who is too busy to care, or just doesn’t care at all; or a person who has given up trying to make a difference in their world. Curtains or blinds continually drawn shut reflect a person who does not desire interaction with the outside world, or is afraid of that world. A dearth of framed photos might suggest a private person who keeps emotional pain locked up inside their heart and doesn’t want to be reminded of it whenever they look at a picture. No mirrors? That one is obvious – the person does not wish to fully look at themselves in the eye and see what is really there. Perhaps because it is too painful to see or that hope for any improvement in their life has taken wing long ago.
However, there are many ways in which we add positive energy to our home, too. The aroma of a meal cooked with love sends its comforting energy wafting throughout the house. Gentle music drifts through the air and soothes our nerves. Lit candles evoke a feeling of romance or of peaceful serenity.
The soul of a home is also enhanced by the life we bring into it. A pet produces a vigorous dynamism that cannot be ignored. Flourishing, verdant plants indicate that a nurturing person lives in the space. Finally, the energy of every person entering your home brings their personal vibration to contribute to your home’s soul energy, too. Let’s hope you have many happy, positive friends! But, seriously, if this is an issue, some energy work in your meditations about protecting yourself from the effects of negativity, and burning scented candles and incense, is in order. Try the sweet aromas of frankincense or rose; for deep energetic clearing, burn sage for the incense; and vanilla scent for the candle.
Energetically cleansing your home so its soul can breathe and nurture you begins with a physical cleaning of the place, continues with conscious placement of objects, is enhanced by fragrant incense or candles, and is enlivened by the energetic life forms placed within it. Most important of all, is the love you bring to your home in the way you care for it, share it with friends, and respect the herculean job it does every day to help you feel nurtured and blessed.
